I can have fun too.

Hey there. I know its been awhile but now I'm back and I am ready to live my life. I want to succeed academically and reinvent myself as a historian/scholar but I also need to understand that without some fun in my life, I will grow old very quickly and possibly die of a broken heart, alone in a cold asylum. On Friday, I decided to break that streak of working hard at my academics to go and play some sports. It was very invigorating for me; the experience rejuvenated the kid in me.

A couple of my friends and myself headed out to Delaware's Grace Brethren Church for a little excitement and competition. Now before you wonder why this happened, let me give you some background information. I'm a member of Campus Crusade for Christ at OWU. By strengthening our bonds as a kingdom of Christ through Jesus, we are able to do activities such as late night sports to get people interested in what we are all about. Not only do we do sports, we do other activities geared towards increasing the number of people in our family. Campus Crusade for Christ is an organization that promotes all kinds of awareness about people's walk in life with Jesus whether it is a teaching or a band playing their hearts out to the Lord. For me, this is one of the ways I need to be able to maintain a strong relationship with the Lord. I am very proud to be a member in His kingdom and by showing him praise, I am able to keep my sanity and serve Him with all of my soul. Hopefully, I do Campus Crusade for Christ justice in my blog as a source of advertisement for students that need a religious outlet in their search for a college (we are a Methodist college by name, that is).
I went to the Church and I expected the area we would be playing is outside. We go in and amazingly, the Church has been converted into a basketball court! The court was in the same arena as worship is held, which piqued my interest even more. The Church looked awesome and so did the courts. I was so blessed to be brought there. Back up in Cleveland at my church, this idea would have never been implemented, at least not in the place of worship.
While I was here, I played a variety of sports, preferably basketball and dodgeball. (By the way, in the two photos that was taken of me playing dodgeball, I am wearing all red, just to differentiate me from the others on the field.) I need the exercise and freedom; my work from college was starting to consume my brain and take over. I was also starting to gain more fat (I am a skinny guy, if you noticed in my pictures) and not enough muscle. What could be better- playing with my friends, getting away from the campus for a little bit, doing all types of sports. This part of the day verged on being in heaven for me; I want to do it again. I need to do it again.

I had to write about my experience at the Church. This proves to you readers that if you bond with the right people, they will take you to people and places you never would have dreamed of. I feel so comfortable around these people. You don't have to stay in a room all day working on the Odyssey, in fact, this is not healthy study habits for anyone, current or prospective students. Get out and enjoy life because you never know what will happen in the future.

It is kind of troubling that you are associating the name of Ohio Wesleyan University with the Campus Crusade for Christ. Actually, I think I'd alert the admissions office regarding this. CCC is incredibly intolerant organization in philosophy, mission and intent. In fact, it has incredibly bad record at OWU itself. To remind you, Ohio Wesleyan, is not a Christian college, has more Muslim students and quite a few students who are either worshiping in a different religion or prefer not to worship any God at all. And as a representative of OWU, you should respect that...that Christian stuff, you can keep in your personal journal, which the Admissions Office blog simply is not.

Well, I'm sorry you are offended by my blog but realize this... I am one person who is posting about his experiences at and outside of OWU. CCC is a part of OWU, no matter what its history is. No organization or club will be without bias from someone or somebody, particularly if that organization has been involved in notorious event before. Nevertheless, I respect your opinion... I am doing and saying that I feel not what others are conveying to me. If you have anything else to say, please take it up with the Admissions team.

I appreciate the follow-up. CCC is not part of OWU. As a person who is obviously representing OWU via your blog, I believe that you should be especially proud of the privilege but also acutely aware that it is one that you should hold with a special sense of what you convey to outside to Ohio Wesleyan readers. CCC is certainly not a representative organization at Ohio Wesleyan, nor is it without its controversial aspects. Not to mention, that it is a religious organization practically banned from the campus 3 years ago for spreading effectively a religious intolerant message. Finally, the very fact, that it is a religious organization, means by bringing religion up you are bound to isolate people who are simple averse to it, regardless. And that is a large part, if not the majority, of the student body at Ohio Wesleyan. So, you can disregard my opinion, but you should respect the facts and your role as an OWU representative. The Admissions Office and especially the right in it will understand that is not a win-win strategy to be bringing this kind of stuff here. Thanks again for your time.

Actually Campus Crusade for Christ is apart of OWU. Campus Crusade for Christ has been a student group on campus since 2004. Currently there are about 100 students involved with Campus Crusade for Christ at OWU. I agree that Ohio Wesleyan is not a Christian university, and I don't believe it claims/markets itself to be one. OWU does however advertise religious groups to future students. I think that it is a bit much to claim that Hasani's blog is hurting anything. I believe the purpose of these blogs are to let incoming students catch a glimpse of the life of an OWU student, and I don't see a problem with an OWU student blogging about activities he participates in with OWU student groups. Obviously readers should keep in mind that one student will in no way represent all that OWU has to offer.

To say that Campus Crusade for Christ is part of Ohio Wesleyan, is to say that OWU has somehow endorsed its presence as part of of the university's mission. Hasani can spend his life and time in whatever ways he deems appropriate: this is his choice and a choice that I respect. The majority of the people who read his OWU blog come to see what and how "a representative student" at OWU does with his time. That's certainly why and how I came across this blog. And when that representative student writes on an official OWU site blog things like "Not only do we do sports, we do other activities geared towards increasing the number of people in our family(i.e. who worship Lord)", it is a problem. Are you using the blog to let people learn about your life at Ohio Wesleyan or are you doing implicit marketing for a very controversial organization nationally? If it is the latter, and a whole blog entry speaks that it is, you know you have crossed a line. Again, in your personal life, make whatever choices you wish, but as an OWU representative exercise some caution what problems marketing your Church will entail.

In my opinion the not mentioning is more of a hindrance. As OWU students we are a very diverse community and I have the confidence in prospective students that they will recognize CCC as an activity Hasani is involved with and not one that represents the university or one that they themselves have to be involved with. It is merely another opportunity. If OWU offers CCC the first thought that should cross the mind of a prospective student is, "if that group is allowed what other opportunities are there that I can involve myself with" not "OWU is only represented by CCC". I also believe it is important to mention that OWU started in the Methodist church and has since evolved into a welcoming community of all faiths as demonstrated by this posting and helped along by the comments made.

CCC is banned in many leading campuses...why do you think that is? That OWU started as a methodist school more than 150 years ago has no bearance on this issue at all. It is not one now and the students who are Methodist are even outnumbered by ones who are Muslim. The bottomline is that CCC's mission is one that infringes on basic personal freedoms.

Samantha said...

But the fact that that evolution happened shows the versatility of OWU. Also the fact that we haven't banned CCC shows our openness as a community and our acceptance of all ideas and cultures. As far as infringement goes, your freedoms can only be infringed upon if you let them be. By facing such challenges it prepares you for the real world, not some idealistic one where all obstacles are removed. I am happy to deal with such issues, though I must admit, I have not had a problem with any of the religious groups on campus. The realism you get at OWU is something I appreciate and am proud to be a part of.

Just out of curiosity, are you at all familiar with their mission or are you just being an throwing naive opinions about diversity and realism? Here is their statement: "Our commitment is based on our Lord's command: "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

This is not about realism. You don't really encounter this in civilized parts of the country. I am guessing you are from somewhere rural.

Samantha said...

I am well aware of their mission and my comments still hold. Their mission is their mission and whether I agree or not I am still not offended by their presence. I am happy to welcome all religious groups and those of religious affiliation. I am also happy to practice my freedoms by rejecting them.

So, Samantha, you are saying that "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations" is a statement that is perfectly acceptable to you? Is that what you are saying?
