I feel so naked. I can't believe my camera fell in the toilet of the Mean Bean. Thanks small jean pockets that can't hold more than one bulky item. Well, I was going to post a whole bunch of pictures that I had been storing for the last three weeks but life happens and I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Oh well, I guess I will have to improvise for now until I get another camera. I hope that this will not be too much of a hassle for you readers out there. I will have to tell the events of the last days of my freshman year by words only, no pictures. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
Fellow BMF members, please forgive me if the order of events are not correct as I was out of the loop for a couple of days.
The guys from Black Men of the Future planned a huge event aptly named "Hip-Hop Week." Truthfully, I did not have a huge role in the events but I did go to all of the events to show support and to represent with the best of my abilities. The first event was our fashion show. I did not have the opportunity to attend the fashion show because I had class from six to eight in the evening. It was a bummer but it was something that could not be helped. I heard that the fashion show was a success and a lot of fun. I am going to move on to the next event because I can not offer any more that what I have been told.
The next event was Hip-Hop Jeopardy in the Willa B. Player Black Resource Center. I was getting ready for this test for my Physical Geography class but I still went and support the participants. To sum up my experience with Hip-Hop Jeopardy as an non-participant, I would have to say chaotic and enthusiastic, to say the least. All of the categories were authentic and I would have loved to participate if schoolwork didn't come first that day.
The next event was a party slash educational day. We went to Manhattan's, the same place where the Bhangra party was held, and had a party that consisted of talent and wit. The event was the DJ and MC Exhibition. I took a more active role, putting on the new BMF shirts and trying to pump the crowd up with the rest of the guys. The order in which everything happened as is follows (as closely as I can remember): regular party, a taste of the upcoming B-boy battle (B-boy Glass representing), regular party commences, local OWU acts Black J and Simo-B spitting their hottest flows, exeunt. The activity got more hot as the night went on and I was highly satisfied with the performance and feedback. I was nervous for the turnout but people really wanted to get away from their studies (Finals was approaching). It was a good time.
The next to last event was supposed to happen a couple of days earlier but rain pushed it back until the last day. There were amateur and professional graffiti artists at hand and they built some beautiful artwork on their canvas. I was actually hoping they would use the JayWalk as their canvas but then their art would be walked on. Graffiti is not meant to be walked over, it is meant to be seen. I like the artist's graffiti but I have actually seen better in my neighborhood. I am not trying to knock the graffiti (it actually was good) but I am accustomed to graffiti in my neighborhood a lot better. Good exposure though.
Finally, the last event of the week was the B-boy competition. I am glad we did it in Benes A because of the glass window leading out to the Jaywalk. This means that everyone walking back from class could get a glimpse of the action as well as people who were in the room. I am glad that I saw the competition. I don't like missing the action of something that is authentic.
Well, that concludes my first blog without pictures. I feel that words can mean something so I hope that people who read this blog can understand and formulate their own pictures on what happened in my events. With this, I am here to officially say- I'm back and I'm here for the summer.
Stimulating your minds with a mental picture,
